Eternità ed eredità dei paesaggi sepolcrali

The 2020 pandemic showed with irreverent realism the “death crisis” of our society. The incapacity to ritualise the moment of the funeral and mourning is reflected in the absence of symbolic architecture. History teaches us that the construction of the tomb, namely the first human stable form, has not only the function of soliciting the art of memory, even when it is no longer associated with remembrance, but also that of structuring humankind life on earth: leaving signs that last through time by means of continuous semantic contamination. With the exception of memorials, the 21st-century city has instead failed to conceive the spaces of the new funeral rites – from the hospice to the crematorium – as sacred spaces. Perhaps the time has come to question ourselves anew about the spaces of relationship between life and death.

La pandemia del 2020 ha mostrato con irreverente realismo la “crisi della morte” della nostra società. L’incapacità di ritualizzare il momento del funerale e del lutto si configura come assenza di un’architettura simbolica. La storia ci insegna che la costruzione della tomba, come prima forma stabile, non ha solo la funzione di sollecitare l’arte della memoria, anche quando non è più associata al ricordo, ma anche quella di strutturare la vita dell’uomo sulla terra: lasciare segni che durano nel tempo per mezzo di continue contaminazioni semantiche. Fatta eccezione per i memoriali, la città del XXI secolo ha invece rinunciato a progettare gli spazi dei nuovi riti funebri – dall’hospice al crematorio – come spazi sacri. Forse è arrivato il momento di interrogarci nuovamente sugli spazi di relazione tra la vita e la morte.
